Instrumental Program: Private Lessons

Private lessons build the technical capacity and habits for children to play an instrument. The instrument is a tool for self-expression and developing problem solving skills. For the child to develop their full potential, the home environment and routines need to be set in collaboration with practice partners and teachers.

Teachers model effective communication, organize learning into sequential steps, and guide practice partners to continue to build their own confidence as teachers and learners so they can serve as the home teacher. Instructors observe and make recommendations about the relationship between the parent and child in order to support the child's self-construction, independence, and lifelong love for learning. Central to the lessons are the child's five basic needs for order, coordination, concentration, independence, and sense of belonging as outlined by Maria Montessori.

Beginner students who participate in Musicianship classes are eligible to sign up for private lessons. Students who have some experience playing need to participate in musicianship classes to be eligible to receive private lessons. Adult supervision in lessons and at home are highly encouraged. Once the child demonstrates independence in learning, the practice partner present in lessons is not required. Students who cannot have a parent present will develop a learning plan with staff to delineate their pathway to independent instrumental practice.
