Musicianship Classes

Musicianship Level 1

Musicianship Level 1 is the entry point to the program for students ages 5-10. Students learn to play percussion, sing and participate in cooperative learning activities to strengthen their socio-emotional skills. No previous music instruction required.

Musicianship serves an important role in building aural and ensemble skills. Students transition from informal learning to formal instruction. Pieces are selected according to abilities of the group and sequentially builds listening, performing, audiating (music thinking), improvising, reading, and writing vocabularies.

Musicianship Level 2

Musicianship Level 2 is the entry point to the program for students ages 11-18. Students learn to play percussion in the orchestra, sing and participate in cooperative learning activities to strengthen their socio-emotional skills. No previous music instruction required.

For students in Musicianship Level 1 who show readiness skills (emotional regulation, ability synthesize into their instruments duple/triple meter and the appropriate solfege skills) they will be invited by the teachers to participate in Musicianship 2.

Successful participation requires to be self-motivated and be able to self-regulate their behavior. Staff will work with parents or guardians to develop these skills in class and at home.

Musicianship Level 3

Musicianship Level 3 is the our college preparatory level class. Students ages 16-18 in this class develop advanced score reading and ear training skills and train for auditions. The class is developed into modules that address the needs of the “whole child” and sets the path of success from a student to a professional musician. This class is a unique experience and highly encouraged for students interested in continuing music in college as a performance major, music education major or music therapy.

Students in this class must be enrolled in the Orchestrating Mentors Program.
